First Day 2011-2012
Well, we survived the first day! It is amazing how slow you have to go in the beginning of the year in order to make sure everyone is on the same page. However, once those routines are established, the pace sure does pick up. Even though the first day has a slow motion feel to it, the day does pass quickly. Here's to a great year for everyone!

Ring....Ring...Miss Holt from Australia is calling!
Skyping Australia was a huge hit! Thanks for bringing the kids back to have the chance to interview Miss Holt, the teacher of our Australian pen pals. Unfortunately, we weren't able to talk directly to the children as planned, but I feel our kiddos learned a lot of great information. After Alexis asked about the ingredients of Pavlova, I asked if there were any parents in the room who wanted to make us some. Thanks to Parker's mom, Kelli, the kids did get to try Pavlova. I think it is safe to say that they all have a sweet tooth and it is very different to the treats most kids eat! By the end of the year, I also plan on bringing in Vegemite and Nutella, which Australian kids eat regularly. Monday, March 28, 2011
G'day Mates!
On April 7th, we will have the chance to Skype with our Australian pen pals! I would like as many of the students to be here as possible around 5:15 pm that evening. There is a 16 hour time difference, therefore we have to do this during the evening in order to talk to our friends. Following the skype session, everyone can head to the gym for the "Sock Hop"!

Oh, What A Day!

Quarter testing---check!
Lockdown---check!
That sums up one of the strangest school weeks ever! The kids did a great job throughout the lockdown time today. On top of being in a lockdown situation, we weren't even in our own classroom! When the lockdown was called, we were in the hallway since lunch had just ended. So, Ms. Lloyd's class and my class headed to the nearest classroom to hunker down. Finally, about an hour after the whole thing started, we were allowed to return to the pod and gather belongings for the end of the day. Give your child a great big hug for the great job they did!

It's That Time Again!
Those who know me best, know that I spend a lot of my free time working on school related things. My husband clearly learned that early on in our marriage. I bought him a Nintendo 64 when we first got married so that he would have something to do while I ignored him to develop plans, or grade papers.
I have been married for twelve years, which means the addition of DSi's, PSP, X-Box 360, Wii and of course, we upgraded to a Playstation 2 along the road. I am sure all of the gaming companies love the money that my family has managed to pour in to their pockets while I worked my way through grad school, and continued to work!
So, over Christmas, I gave myself and my family a new gift. No, it wasn't a PS3. I am holding out on that one. Instead, I left all school related work in the trunk of my car (until I needed the space), then I just left it in the garage!
I managed to read six books, play board games daily with my family, and watch tv (when it wasn't set on a video game). I even went sledding!
But, the new year has rolled in, and school starts in two days! It is time for me to pick up the plan book, and put down the remote control and the next book in my reading collection.
I have some interesting things in store for the kids over the next few weeks. We start our soil unit, which will be a collaborative effort between Mrs. Collins, Mrs. Eubanks, Ms. Shelton and me. Students will be moving from teacher to teacher during this time to complete different activities. In math, we will focus on elapsed time and temperature. In reading, we will continue with our unit on Disasters. Through E-pals, I have teamed up with a classroom in an area of California where earthquakes occur regularly. We will explore this area using Google Earth, and hopefully get moving on penpal letters with this classroom.
Even though the vacation is over shortly, I look forward to coming back refreshed and ready to go on Monday. The addtion of several new pairs of comfortable shoes will be icing on the cake for me!
